whO we are

Founder Stelios Apostolopoulos GSC, is a professional DoP with over 30 years of experience in fiction, documentary and commercial shoots. He has filmed underwater on more than 140 national and international productions, making him by far the most experienced underwater cinematographer working in the unique locations of the Aegean Sea.

Out of the Blue is based in Athens, Greece, at the center of a country with 16.040 km of sunny coastline and about 2.500 islands, providing an unlimited choice of location, setting and light. We can help our clients choose from a unique wealth of accessible settings –from rocky steep coasts with deep blue, to sandy beaches with emerald waters- in the clear, vibrant, thriving waters of the Mediterranean.

Out of the Blue constantly cooperates with a number of  highly specialised associates who can cover the needs of each underwater shooting.

Our team includes underwater cinematographer, underwater camera assistant, underwater light operator, underwater photographer, underwater provisers, security divers, freediving instructor for actors, as well as technicians for all underwater and cinematographic equipment  that are needed on the surface to support the shooting.

Stelios Apostolopoulos was born and raised in Chania, Crete. He studied electrical engineering and later Cinematography. In 1991, he works as a camera assistant for the shootings of a documentary on the oldest shipwreck in the world, at the island of Dokos; there he takes the decision to get involved with underwater cinematography. Since then, his occupation is nonstop and up to nowadays he has undertaken and completed underwater shootings for over one hundred Greek and international productions, in Greece and abroad.

In 1994, Stelios founds Out of the Blue aiming towards the buildjng of a team able to undertake and cover the needs of any underwater shooting for the Greek or the international market. At the same time he works as DoP for commercials,  feature films and documentaries. His interest on environmental issues brings him in long collaboration with Greenpeace and WWF Greek offices as well as the Natural History Museum of the University of Crete, for whom he produces wildlife and public awareness films.

Anemon

In 2003, Stelios and other colleagues co-found ANEMON, a company aiming to produce high quality documentary films for the national and the international market. Last years, he has participated as a DoP in awarded international co-productions of ΑΝΕΜΟΝ Productions such as: "Nostos"“A Family Affair”, “Little Land”, “Twice A Stranger”, “1821”, “Sayome” and “A Place Without People”. He has also filmed and directed the award winning documentary “The Call of the Mountain”

He has produced and directed the documentary film "The Call of the Mountain" which has been awarded with  the Prix Via Stella – France 3 at CMCA, the Best Photography Prize at the Sole Luna Festival, the Audience Prize at the AGON Festival of Athens and the Medium-length Documentary Prize at the Doc-Fest Documentary Festival of Chalkida.
